Irrigation solution, sterile and endotoxin-free

Composition

1000 ml solution contain:

Sorbitol   20 g

Mannitol  10 g

in water for injection.

Indications

• For irrigation during endoscopic examinations of body cavities
• For irrigation during urological interventions by en- doscopy involving HF current, g. TUR (transurethral resections), disintegration of bladder stones, interven- tions of the ureter, interventions of the renal pelvis etc.
• For irrigation of gynaecological interventions by en- doscopy involving HF current
• For irrigation during arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder or other joints involving HF current
• For postoperative

Dosage

The volume required will depend on the extent and dura- tion of the intervention and on the postoperative course.

Overdosage

During long-lasting interventions particularly when a large venous sinus is opened, an inflow of irrigation fluid can lead to fluid overload with dilution hyponatraemia (hypotonic hyperhydration, corresponding to a water in- toxication).

Headache, nausea, bradycardia, elevated blood pressure, restlessness and disorientation are symptoms of hyperhy- dration. In severe cases coma-like states can occur.

Treatment in cases of overdosage

Discontinuation of irrigation, correction of the water and electrolyte balance depending on the particular clinical situation.

Warning

• Do not use for infusion
• Strictly sterile precautions are to be taken when han- dling the irrigation solution
• Only use the solution if the seal is undamaged and the solution is clear
• Opened containers must not be saved, quantities left over must be discarded
• Re-use of single-use devices creates a potential risk of patient or user. It may lead to contamination and/ or impairment of functional capability. Contamination and/or limited functionality of the device may lead to injury, illness or death of the patient.
• Store out of reach of children.

  Sorbitol/Mannitol 3 B. Braun should be applied with care in:

• cardiopulmonary diseases
• disturbances of renal function.

•  

  Disturbances of the acid-base balance and disturbances of the water-electrolyte balance should be corrected before the use of Sorbitol/Mannitol 3% B.Braun.

• Contraindications

  Sorbitol/Mannitol 3 B. Braun may not be applied with:

• oligo-anuria
• fructose-sorbitol intolerance
• methyl alcohol intoxication
• hypersensitivity to
•  Adverse side effects

  Sorbitol/Mannitol 3% B. Braun contains sorbitol. If there is undiagnosed hereditary fructose-sorbitol intolerance the administration of solutions containing sorbitol can lead to nausea, hypoglycaemia, elevation of lactate lev- els, acidosis and acute liver damage, with possible lethal consequences.

   

  For this reason it is necessary to exclude the possibility of an hereditary fructose intolerance or a fructose-1,6- diphosphatase deficiency before commencement of irri- gation. If details of the case history are not available or are not unequivocal a fructose intolerance test must be carried out first. If this is not done there is the possibil- ity of severe complications (including a lethal outcome under certain circumstances).

  Expiry date

  The solution must not be used after the expiry date given on the label.
